The internet is chock full of stories about people who’ve set up a side hustle that’s eventually turned into their full-time job. And if you’re stuck in an office, or in a job you don’t totally love, you too might have been considering a side hustle as a path to something better. Here’s what you need to know.

You can totally do this

Most adults started their working lives juggling two jobs at high school or at university. Having a split focus between two or more jobs isn’t exactly uncommon, it’s just that we tend to roll with a single, full-time job once we’re in a position to score one. The brain can and does cope with juggling lots of pressing priorities.

It doesn’t happen overnight  

But as Rachel told us, it does happen. Don’t be too impatient if you want your side hustle to become your regular gig  –  it’s a side hustle for a reason! If we all got paid for doing what we love, well … the world would have a lot of beer tasters and ice cream critics.

Don’t let it get in the way of your day job

Remember where your main income comes from and respect the time and effort your boss requires from you. Make sure your contract for your regular gig allows for you to have a business on the side  –  you don’t want to get in trouble with HR! Even if you hate your day job, be careful to toe the line. After all, being punctual, polite and hardworking doesn’t take any talent, only effort.

DIY social will help you hugely

Have you checked out the cost of a social media manager these days? That’s a big chunk of change flowing out of your pocket if you have to hire someone to do the job. Social media companies such as Hootsuite runs free online courses where you can learn how to DIY social media, and save yourself a business cost.

Find your ‘thing’

Your ‘thing’ happens at the overlapping intersection between what you can make money from, what you love, and what the world needs. That’s your sweet spot. It’s no good to have one or two out of those three  –  your ‘thing’ should cover all of those, in order to work.

Sacrifices are inevitable

You’ll have to give up parts of your life if you really want your side hustle to work. We’re talking free time (obvi), sleep, your spending money when you initially get started, and even your social life. Those are all fine to sacrifice, just make sure you keep your self-respect.
